Introduction
Sometimes the impact of our work at MPOTS comes to light in unusual ways. Recently we had a student – let’s call him John – sign up for a funded course as a pathway out of long-term unemployment.
John joined the earthmoving skills group, part of the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled initiative to support people to learn skills that can be applied in in-demand industries.
The Connection
Although John had intended to take the traditional path of completing a course, learning new skills and then looking for a job, a fortuitous meeting at MPOTS resulted in a fantastic outcome for him.
Whilst attending the earthmoving skills course (comprising front end loader, skid steer loader, excavator and haul truck skills), John got talking with a project manager for Fulton Hogan who was also on an MPOTS training course.
This chance conversation led to an offer of employment for John, who now works full-time for Fulton Hogan with the skills he obtained through the smart and skilled program.
