How to Get Your Forklift Licence?

  1. Check entry requirements
Participants must be at least 18 years old, have basic English reading and writing skills, provide evidence of identity as required by SafeWork/WorkSafe, and wear PPE including safety boots, hi-vis vests, and hard hats.

  2. Choose your training option
3-Day Training – fully in-person, combining theory, practical, and assessment (available QLD, NSW, VIC).
2-Day Training + Online – complete online pre-work, then attend 2 days onsite (currently listed for Melbourne; Sydney sessions appear when scheduled).

  3. Complete training & assessment
Training covers theory and practical forklift operation. A licensed assessor will test your knowledge and practical skills.

  4. Receive your Statement of Attainment
On successful completion, you’ll be issued a Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0003 – Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck.

  5. Apply for your High Risk Work (HRW) Licence
Submit your Statement of Attainment to your state regulator (SafeWork NSW, WorkSafe VIC, WHS QLD, etc.). HRW licences are valid for 5 years.

Forklift FAQs

  • LO Licence – required to operate a Load Shifting Order Picker or turret/VNA truck (Very Narrow Aisle). This licence only qualifies you for those machines.
  • LF Licence (TLILIC0003) – required to operate forklifts with a mast and elevating load carriage with fork arms or attachments. This covers counterbalance, reach, side-loading, all-terrain and truck-mounted forklifts, with no size restriction (but excludes LO-classified machines).

  • Both licences are valid for 5 years once issued as a High Risk Work Licence.

Participants must be 18+, able to read, understand and write English, and able to meet evidence-of-identity requirements set by SafeWork/WorkSafe. PPE is mandatory — safety boots, hi-vis vest and hard hat.

Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll need to apply for a High Risk Work Licence through the relevant state or territory WHS regulator, submitting the necessary paperwork and paying any applicable fees.

Course fees vary by location and session and are shown on the course page (e.g., costs are listed separately for NSW, QLD and VIC). After you pass, you apply to your state regulator for the High Risk Work (HRW) licence, and regulator application fees are paid separately.

Training duration depends on the course option:

  • 3-Day Full Course – theory, practical and assessment (NSW, QLD, VIC).

  • 2-Day Training + Online – 1 day of online pre-learning + 2 days practical (Sydney & Melbourne only).

A High Risk Work Licence (LF class) is valid for 5 years across Australia. After this, it must be renewed through your state or territory regulator.
