Forklift licence training for Queensland manufacturers, funded and close to home

Manufacturers on the Fraser Coast need licensed forklift operators, but few businesses can fill a whole class on their own. As an approved training provider for Manufacturing Skills Queensland (MSQ), Kallibr Training ran a public TLILIC0003 Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck (LF) course at the Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Oakhurst, near Maryborough.

The course gave local manufacturing businesses and their workers access to High Risk Work Licence training with MSQ funding. It is also the first step in Kallibr's work with the manufacturing sector.

At a glance

  • Course: TLILIC0003 – Licence to operate a forklift truck (LF)
  • Where: Manufacturing Centre of Excellence, 73 Nagel Street, Oakhurst QLD 4650
  • Format: Public course over three days, practical and hands-on
  • Funding: MSQ funding for eligible Queensland manufacturing businesses
  • Trainer: Eric, Kallibr Training
  • Result: Every participant was assessed competent

The opportunity

Forklift operators keep a manufacturing site moving. They load trucks, feed production lines and stack stock in racking. In Queensland, operating a forklift needs a High Risk Work Licence. For a small or mid-sized manufacturer, training one or two people has usually meant sending them to a city training centre, or waiting until there are enough staff for a private course.

MSQ wanted to make licence training easier for manufacturers in the region. A public course at the Manufacturing Centre of Excellence meant businesses could book seats for the workers who needed them, train locally, and use MSQ funding to bring the cost down.

The training solution

Kallibr ran the course at the Centre of Excellence, so participants trained in a real manufacturing and warehouse setting, with pallet racking, loads and counterbalance forklifts. Our trainer Eric led three days of practical training, including:

  • Planning the work and checking the site for hazards
  • Pre-start checks on the forklift
  • Picking up, moving and placing loads, including stacking at height in pallet racking
  • Manoeuvring safely through a cone course and around pedestrians and obstacles
  • Shutting down and securing the forklift after use

Classes were kept small, so every participant had plenty of time on the machines. The course finished with the licence assessment, run to the national assessment instrument.

MSQ funding, sorted before day one

Funding only helps if it is easy to use. We guided participants and their employers through the MSQ funding process, from checking eligibility to completing the application, so it was confirmed before training started and nobody arrived unsure about cost.

MSQ funding is for eligible Queensland manufacturing businesses, for example in food and beverage, engineering, chemicals and renewables, with fewer than 200 employees. Funding must be approved before the course starts. Call us on 1300 668 141 and we'll check whether your business is eligible.

The outcome

The course drew participants from a wide range of manufacturing backgrounds. Because it was a public course, businesses of different sizes and industries could each send the workers they needed, without having to fill a class of their own.

After three days of training with Eric, every participant was assessed competent in TLILIC0003 and received a Statement of Attainment, ready to apply for their forklift High Risk Work Licence (LF) with WorkSafe Queensland.

Why it matters

This course shows what Kallibr and MSQ can do together for Queensland manufacturers: funded, practical licence training at a purpose-built local facility, open to the whole sector. We plan to run more courses at the Centre of Excellence.

Common questions

Can my business send just one or two workers?

Yes. Public courses are open to individual workers from any business, so you don't need a full group of your own.

Who is eligible for MSQ funding?

Queensland manufacturing businesses with fewer than 200 employees, subject to MSQ's rules. The funding must be approved before the course starts, and we help with the application.

Do participants get a forklift licence?

Participants who are assessed competent receive a Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0003. They use it to apply for their High Risk Work Licence with WorkSafe Queensland.

How do I book the next course at Oakhurst?

Call 1300 668 141 or contact us, and we'll let you know the next date and check your MSQ eligibility.
